Sage /CC 2024 Litter
Finn
Finn retrieving a pigeon at just 10 weeks old. I figured if the prior three pairings between Sage and CC all produced NAVHDA NA Breeders Awards, I better keep a pup from her last date with Sage. I'm glad I did. He's a very bold and confident pup.
Finn hit the ground running at 4 months old on the Montana upland opener! He had solid points and retrieves on both sharptails and huns.
Scout
Scout (foreground) and Huck (background) were both swimming like little muskrats at 9 weeks old. I see bright futures ahead for both of these littermates.
Andrew Gilmer of RJS Griffs kept Scout from this Sage /CC pairing.

Huck
Huck with a pigeon he had just pointed, allowed me to walk in front of him, flush and shoot and retrieved to hand at 5 months old. He has huge water love and a harsh coat. I love what I am seeing so far! Huck is the pup that I kept out of this litter as a future boy in our breeding program. Check out his page under Our Griffs for more on him.

Obi, with big brother, Chewie.
Obi (left) and Chewie (right) in the driftboat and at the trailhead.
Obi is a sweetie with intense desire to please. His focus when given a task or learning a new one was immediately apparent. At 6 months he was enthusiastically retrieving and presenting wild birds to hand with no force fetch training. He was reliably steady to fall by 11 months. Not long after, he was steady on point through multiple birds being flushed and shot by the gunner, before being released to retrieve. He knows his job. He is a big runner with a motivated search. He is an aggressive swimmer and enjoys initial exposure to the NAVHDA "duck search." He's a calm presence in the house, the boat or on the trail. I'm looking forward to his first "real" season this fall and letting the wild birds teach him what I can’t.
I would take a dog through an entire force fetch training without hesitation, but it sure is nice having dogs whose genetics make them happy to put feathered things in your hands so they can go out and find more feathered things.
Paul, MT
Obi's Pennhip score is fantastic at R.20 and L.20
Paul's older dog Chewie is from Sage and VC Salmon River Dynamite Diva's 2021 litter. (See more on Chewie below under that litter.)

Hilde

Hilde has progressed very well - an incredible balance between relaxing with us at home and hard charging in the field. An ideal companion..., getting Hilde out to experience as many wild birds as possible this year has set her up for a lot of future success (in addition to some big wins for her this fall.
...getting the chance to hunt with you, Karen, Sage and Willow last year really solidified my confidence in getting one of their puppies and from you both as breeders.
Andy, MT
Andy's wife's comment when he was filling out our one year survey was 'She's perfect, no notes' But then she added a few notes...
One of the things I noticed immediately was Hilde’s confidence and independence, while also remaining very attuned to us. She has never been afraid to check out new things and greet new people and dogs. She bonded with both of us very quickly, but has also shown initiative in exploring on her own. She is curious, playful, and brave. She is very affectionate without being clingy or needy. I feel like you prepared her to self-soothe and regulate. She whined for about 5 minutes her first night in her kennel, before adjusting and now kenneling on command and happily spending time there.
Hilde scored a 110 Prize 1 in her NAVHDA NA test. Great job and thanks for testing her!

Cass
She is the best puppy. Has quickly learned the rules of the house! ( no jumping on people or doors, no barking inside although she hardly barks at all anyway, no whining to be let in, sits when we stop on a walk on the leash, “go to bed” means get in kennel, “kennel” means go to her dog run… etc.). She responds so well to praise. When we go out to the field she will hold a point. We LOVE this dog. We are a pack!

L) Winston (R) and Cascade's Wallace (L) from our Stormy/Dutch 2014 litter. Middle- Winston honoring Wallace on point at 4 months old. R) Winston's opening day rooster.
High energy, with a huge bird drive. He’s good in the home, and craves affection and direction. Your communication and preparation was fantastic. You were very accommodating with our crazy schedule and made the entire process amazing.
Seth and Erin, MT
Seth also had the opportunity to observe the results of our Early Neurological Stimulation which we began after Wallace's litter was born...I’ve noticed differences between Wallace and Winston in that Winston is much more tolerant of uncomfortable touch or unnatural positions. He’s more willing to trust and allow us to put him through things.

You two did an amazing job socializing, so it was easy for us to just continue where you left off. Over all he is the best dog, with the best personality that we’ve ever had. Thank you again! You are amazing breeder!

Socialization of the litter is the big difference between amateur and professional breeders, you are the latter!
Took to the water very well. Never puppy paddled at all, just hit the water and started to swim.
All in all she’s the nicest pup I have ever trained for myself, it’s been a ton of fun for both of us.

Gritty

Gritty's owner says he was hunting hard and holding staunch points his first hunting season. On one occasion during his first year, he went on point 380 yards (GPS collar verified) from his owner. He held the point until his owner arrived to flush the covey of chukar. By the end of his first season, Gritty was running 350-400 yards out in front in open chukar country and automatically adjusting to 25 yards when in thick pheasant cover. Lots of field time builds lots of confidence!
Gritty's NA test was a maximum score 112 Prize 1. Thanks for testing him!

Chewie

Tawna Skinner, owner of Chewie's dam, Dyna and Phil, owner of Chewie's sire, Sage, with Chewie after his 204 UT score was read. A proud day for all of us for sure! Thank you Paul!
Hopefully we can kill enough birds over him this fall to keep him from being disappointed in us. He’s really something. His nose, steady drive, and nice point notwithstanding… his compliance, presence in the house, and the fact that he is perhaps the best drift boat dog I’ve ever owned make him something special.
Paul, MT
Chewie scored a maximum 112 points/ Prize 1 in his NAVHDA NA test at 7 months old with his 10 year old handler.
2023 Update: At just 2.5 years old, Chewie received maximum score of 204 in his UT test qualifying him for the NAVHDA Invitational. Neither Chewie or his owner/handler had ever done the UT test before. Chewie had never been to a pro trainer. His owner just hunted him (alot!) and participated in some NAVHDA training days. Awesome job Paul! Thanks for testing him!
As I have pointed out in some prior comments, the difference in the puppy coat as seen in the early pictures to the adult coat is quite marked. Look at Chewie as a pup in the "family reunion" picture above compared to his adult pictures. They won't stay fluffy forever....

This is a family portrait of Sage and Lou with Lou's 8 beautiful puppies. We hoped to entice them to pose with some fresh killed quail and partridge, but they were more interested in Lou.
Shelli from Deep Creek Griffons in Idaho wrote the following in her puppy update to the folks getting these pups after a weekend hunting behind Sage "... what a remarkable hunter. Beautiful, cooperative, hardworking, honest. As a sire to your new puppy, he is everything anyone could possibly want in a dog, and I couldn't be happier or more excited for all of you."

Judith Basins Roaring Benelli, "Ben"
Thought I would drop you a note about the pup we kept, Judith Basins Roaring Benelli “Ben”. I took her to water for the first time tonight and what a show she put on. She charged into the water like an otter. I thought she misjudged what it was but it did not faze her and she swam around and played in it like it was old hat.

Crockett
"Crockett has turned out to be a truly amazing young dog who is exceeding my expectations as a first year hunting companion and exceeding our expectations as a wonderful new member of the family. He is still a goof at times, but his ability to “flip the switch” is impressive for such a young dog.
Crockett is getting better at marking downed birds and recently made a nearly blind retrieve in current that spanned over a hundred yards."

2022 Update: Crockett's Pennhip score is a fantastic R.22 L.18

River
"By the third day of chukar hunting, one of the others hunting with us made the comment, that he couldn’t believe she wasn’t 3 years old! He stated that “it looked like River was watching what the other dogs did and then implementing it”.
During that specific hunt, she hunted with the older dogs, pointed 25+ covies of chukars and huns (8 covies found and pointed by her first). In addition, she found and retrieved over 1/3 of the birds shot. She never ran through a covey after the first encounter on the first day. She backed beautifully and by the third day was hunting like an older dog.
She seems to “learn” what we want quickly and then implements it. She was very good at finding lost/wounded birds."

I bought Leo because of you and your reputation among those who know you and know Griffs, and because of our interactions by email and on the phone. You clearly cared deeply about your breeding program and the pups. We were even more assured of our decision after meeting you at your house.

2018 Update: Willie's owner decided to test Willie in the NAVHDA NA test with just one week of preparation before the test and Willie scored 98 points for a Prize 2. Nice job and thanks for testing him!
Elmer
"We are just really happy with Elmer. He’s such an affectionate family dog, he is smart easily trained, he is energetic, he’s a good bird dog (going to be great!), and he has personality. He’s just an all-around great dog. I feel I'm not only a client of you guys, but a friend on the east coast. You guys always respond and give me guidance when I have questions. "

Gizmo
Gizmo
Gizmo and his owner are inseparable whether hunting, fishing or working at the store. Gizmo meets and receives/ delivers the mail each morning when the mail is delivered to the store. Here Gizmo is giving his owner a hug after completing a pheasant retrieve in SD. (every dog and owner have their own special rituals)
2018 update: Gizmo scored a maximum score of 112 points for a Prize 1 in his NAVHDA NA test. Nice job and thanks for testing him!

Mira
I just wanted to give you an update on Mira. I took her over to North Dakota several times to hunt with friends and family and everyone, including myself, was very impressed. She had several solid points, stayed at a nice distance, checked back, and retrieved very well. Basically, I can't think of anything negative about how she hunts. Tons of energy and just a great, sweet dog......I couldn't be more happy.

Kona
Kona's owner is a first time bird dog owner who reports that in over 20 days of hunting her first season, they never got skunked. Kona was pointing, retrieving and tracking crippled birds solidly at less than one year old. She also hunts in front of any of her owner's friends with or without him being present.
"Pointed on 70% + of the birds she encountered over the hunting season and was getting better as the season progressed, as expected. Obviously biased but I can't imagine a better dog. She is so fun to hunt with and really likes to hunt. Always ready to go find birds. Is sweet to everyone she meets. Great personality. Friends I've hunted with this last year are already jealous of Kona. She's gonna be a rockstar when she has a few seasons under her belt.

Tipper at almost 9 years old still going strong!
Tipper's owner says that in addition to bird hunting, she has been an excellent boat companion on many fishing trips. She was pointing and retrieving her first season. She loves the water and is great with kids.

Rainy
Rainy is the pup I kept for myself from this litter. Her mix of playful goofiness around the house, and her determination and drive in the field has been so much fun. Check out her page under Our Griffs for more pictures and info on her.
Covey

Copper
"Copper continues to impress us with his gentle nature and keen sense of exploration in the woods. We've had a great snowy start to winter so he has been out with us cross country skiing, ski touring and snowshoeing."
J & K , British Columbia
Copper also goes fishing, paddleboarding, and hiking with his family. and was in voluntarily in the cold water at a very young age.
He produced approximately 30 grouse his first year for his owners and was retrieving with very little training.

Ruby
Ruby makes her home in Nome, Alaska where she divides her time between hunting and her family, going to work with her owner and playing with her kids.
Otis
(Otis is the pup on the right in the picture).
I have been very pleased with our pup, Otis. He has retrieved 30-40 pheasants, 15 sharps, 6 chuckars, 20 huns, and several mallards, the last three roosters yesterday. His first points and retrieves were at 4 months. He is now ranging much further and yesterday for the first time got out too far which is an easy fix. He has pointed huns, sharps, roughed grouse, chuckars, and pheasants. I am very pleased at how quickly he started. He has been much less destructive than my german wire hairs though he is still a pup and too be watched. He is great with kids, our llamas, chickens, cats, and other dogs, large and small. He sits in a blind well, does well on car trips to North and South Dakota, stays close when skiing and has been easy to train. He solidly busts through cattails without complaint. So far, I have no complaints and would buy another dog tomorrow if my wife would let me.
I think you guys are doing a great job with early stimulation, gave good instructions, and have great genetics. My other dogs have either been hot on birds or people but not both. My friends are shocked at his abilities compared to some of their older dogs.

York
Just want to let you know that so far we don’t think we could
have picked a better puppy if we had been first on the list! York has already
proved himself to be smart and alert, as well as handsome and loving. He’s also
really calm in the house and around the cats, which thankfully makes life way
more peaceful than I had feared.
York perks up when he’s outside, and we were amazed that he even jumped in willingly and swam across a narrow section of the Teton River when we went exploring on Sunday.
Here are a few pictures. Thanks to you and Karen for picking and starting such a great puppy for us! We definitely feel like we picked the right breeder. (Excerpts from emails when York was 10 weeks old)
York has great intelligence and problem solving ability. It’s interesting to watch him try to get treats from a problem-solving toy, or to get at an object that he wants, and to see that he rarely makes the same mistake twice. He masters those toys very quickly, but still enjoys them. Very friendly and spirited. He is also very calm in the house (living up to the Griffon reputation) and full of energy outside, which is perfect. Although he is rowdy when encouraged to be rowdy, he demonstrates gentleness when it is fit. ...the vet said that she knows Griffons to be aloof, and commented that she was really surprised at how friendly and socialized York is. (Excerpts from emails at 9 months old)

Milo
Milo at 7 months of age with a morning's bag of Montana
roosters. Milo accounted for 16 roosters that weekend. Milo spent a few months in Montana with a local trainer before going to his new home in Georgia. Milo's owners say he has got the quail hunting down south figured out and pointed 6 coveys and 5 singles on his third quail hunt. He retrieved all shot birds to hand. They say Milo is eager, has great game drive and settles at at his owner's feet at night and is a social little guy.
LolaLola's owners say she has been showing strong points her first year on pheasant and quail in Eastern WA.
AbeAbe with first Pheasant at 5 months old in ID.
My wife likes my other hunting dogs but Abe is her favorite dog. Abe is so easy going in the house. Everyone that comes to visit, loves Abe. He loves children, he is so easy going that young kids do not get pushed over. If I was looking for another griffon, I would want another one with the same breeding. ...the easiest dog I have ever trained (excerpts from email from Abe's owner) Leo F., ID 2015 Update: Abe's PennHip results are in the 90th percentile! StellaStella on a hunt in Italy.
Stella competing in Agility
Stella is one great dog. She's everything you said she'd be and more. She excels at obedience training and has already passed 4 levels on her way to a AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.
For hunting, I found someone through NAVHDA to help with training. He has accesses to land, raises birds and has all the training devices. She's doing well in all aspects. She was a little slow to point but is doing fine now. She loves to retrieve and has a soft mouth. I'm planning our first real hunting trip for next week - ruffed grouse in Minnesota's North woods. Regardless of how full my game bag is, Stella is a joy to hunt with. She seems to know just how far ahead to range, she has solid points and excels at tracking and retrieving downed birds. I've been hunting with a 20ga this year and have winged numerous birds. Stella finds them quickly and brings them back alive. Over Thanksgiving, I took my father and his Weimaraner on a canned chuckar hunt. I was worried Stella would only want to play with the Weim. Nothing to worry about - they hunted together, respected and backed each other's points and the Weim let Stella do all the retrieving. Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with every aspect of this hound -she's a sweet house dog and a relentless hunter. Mike L. MN ( Stella's first year) |

Gus
Gus stayed with us for some training until he was almost 6 months old. He was solidly pointing and retrieving sharptails at 4 months old and as the second picture can attest, was doing the same with pheasants before 6 months old. As the next photos show, Gus is now tearing it up on quail and ducks in TX (and enjoying "kid time" with his new family.) Gus's owner sent him to a local trainer for a refresher before his second season and that trainer said that in his 50 years of training dogs, Gus had one of the best noses he had ever seen.
"He's a brag dog for me, and hopefully a brag dog for you too! The breed's family friendliness was obviously a huge selling point for us, and via your early socialization techniques he has certainly lived up to that expectation.
He's held up surprisingly well in the heat down here. I always run him fully soaked and well hydrated when it gets warm, but I think we can safely say Griffs can handle Texas just fine."

Boone hunting with the the big dog at 11 weeks old.
Boone (From our 2011 Maggie and Jacque litter)
Hope you had a good Christmas. Thought I'd let you know how the puppy was doing. We
named him Boone. A horse breeder once told me that the key to success with
horses is "superior genetics". I think you have achieved that with this litter.
Crate training went off without a hitch. He is growing like a weed and seems to
be happy and healthy. Still likes to sit on our laps and cuddle at night watching FOX news.
Now to the good stuff. He gets to tag along on hunts most every day. He has hunting figured out pretty good, grab a shotgun or bird vest and he turns himself inside out. He meets the lab when he's retrieving and helps bring the bird back the rest of the way. Pointed a hen pheasant and works the wind like a pro. Don't get me wrong he's not hunting, he just walks somewhere by me. If we get into birds he's got his nose in the air and wants to do something just not sure what. He's seen about 85 birds get killed in his short life, and loves every minute of it. His social skills are fantastic he hasn't met another hunting dog he didn't want to tag along with. He's fetching a puppy bumper pretty solid for about 3 minutes then gets bored. Gun shyness was a small concern, but that lasted three shots. Shoot a bird and he's after it. We had a bird jump out of a bird vest the other day and take off. No need to worry, Boone had it caught in 15 feet. His prey drive is outstanding, he can track the barn cat anywhere it goes. Thank you so much for the opportunity to own a dog of this quality, it is a privilege.
Ryan L. -Montana
Boone was just 11 weeks old when this email was received. (We don't generally recommend gunfire conditioning at this accelerated rate, but it worked out ok for Ryan. See photo at bottom of page for Boone at 4 months pointing birds.)

Willie at approximately 4 months. Click to enlarge.
Willie (From our 2011 Maggie and Jacque litter)
Whatever program you have for socializing those puppies worked
out extremely well. Willie took right to the crate and on the first night he
whined for about 3 minutes then slept till 4, I took him out to pee and then
crated him again and he whined for about 3 minutes and then slept until 7:30.
Since then we crate him at night and he never whines and if I take him out at 11
or so will sleep thru until I get up a little before 6:00.
...Maybe it is because he was dominant to start with but he is mister confidence. So much
so that I suspect I will have some challenges ahead but fortunately he is smart as a whip, and while independent is always checking in. We’ll see how that goes in 10 months but so far so good for now. He is so personable, easy going, smart, and confident that I have no doubt that he will be a great hunter and companion.
... I thought you might be interested to see this recent photo of Willie. You’d be proud to know how many comments I receive like, “Wow, he’s a really good looking dog.” And the like. He currently weights about 40 pounds. His temperament could not be better and his trainability is just amazing. He has a rock steady whoa that he has performed at least a dozen times with deer running across his path while on a walk. We’ll see how he does with a stinky pheasant in front of his nose. Retrieving with a dummy is just about flawless.
...I decided I should teach him to go get the newspaper in the morning. I showed him what to do the first two mornings and
the third morning and everyday thereafter I just open the door.
...he shows all the signs of being one of those rare dogs that only comes around every now and again that most people never have the good fortune of partnering with.

Cooper
Coop continues to impress in the field. We've had him on Ruffed grouse, sharp tails, pheasants, and woodcock. His drive and his willingness to hunt in front of anyone in the group are two of his best attributes. He is always friendly, loves to hunt and is a great family dog. We had our first child last month and were a little unsure how Cooper would handle not being the center of attention and unfortunately not be able to hunt as much this fall, but all concern was quickly gone. Cooper seems to understand that he needs to gentle around our little guy and has adjusted to more lounging time around the house very well. (Excerpts from emails from Cooper's owner, Seth G., MN in 2014)

Thought I would share some pic's of this falls hunting. We couldn't be
happier with Tucker's performance...he is truly a top-notch dog, at 1 year
old.
Some serious cold water retrieves out of the Missouri River....Tucker is an
amazing dog !!
These were all water retrieves in the Missouri River, half of the birds were
still alive when he caught up with them 80-100 yards out into the river.
With the current he would end up 200 yards downstream from the blind. Outside temps in the low teens.....the dog is rugged as they come !!!
